Summer Businesses Fear Coronavirus Lockdowns Means a Lost SeasonApril 20, 2020
Todd Callewaert said he plans to wait as long as possible to open his family’s businesses on Michigan’s Mackinac Island, which include the Island House Hotel and Ryba’s Fudge Shops. The company typically hires more than 250 people for a season that runs from the start of May to the end of October.
“We don’t want a false start,” he said. “We need a hard date that we can open, is what we need, and then you can start planning. If it’s July 1, so be it.”
For the moment, Mr. Callewaert said, there is mainly uncertainty. “We have no ability to prepare right now,” he said. “Are people going to travel? We don’t know.”
